Greenbelt was the first community planned and built by the federal government. Designed to evoke the English garden cities of the 19th century, the layout included swaths of undeveloped forest and parkland between neighborhoods to preserve the natural beauty of the area. Residential neighborhoods are connected by pedestrian walkways and overpasses that let people walk to the town center without having to cross busy roads. Many of the town’s government buildings were constructed in a snazzy Art Deco style, and rapid transit rail serves the area from Washington DC. There are also many apartments for rent.
