The city of Fredericksburg, population 19,279
is located 48 miles south west of Washington D.C. along Interstate
95 on the banks of the Rapidan River in the Eastern Region
of the state. Its location in a valley at the head of navigation
on the Rappahannock River led to the city's becoming a prosperous
port. The Fredericksburg Market Square Fair, held in May,
features Colonial and contemporary craftsmen, preservation
activities, music, food and children's activities. Two historic
scenic routes run from Fredericksburg -- Hwy 3 leads down
the Northern Neck past several historic sites of interest,
and Hwy 17 follows the Rappahannock River to Tappahannock
and Gloucester, crosses the York River and goes on to Williamsburg
via the Colonial Parkway. Renter occupied housing is 59% of
total housing.
